What Does It Take to Leave Everything You Ever Knew — and Start Over?

I’m Kevin Denee, a husband, a father, and an author of the upcoming book The Son-in-Law. This memoir tells the story of leaving a high-demand religious organization at 34 and rebuilding life, marriage, and identity from the ground up.

On Leaving and Rebuilding

In 2016, my wife and I walked away from everything familiar. We had come to believe that the organization we belonged to was not where we could build the future we wanted for our family.

We left behind careers, leadership roles, friendships, family, and a shared belief system. The cost was real, and the path forward was unclear.

What followed was a long, painful, and ultimately transformative process of rebuilding from the ground up. It is a story marked by fear and courage, anxiety and hope, loss and healing. Above all, it is a story about what it takes to leave, and what it takes to begin again.

The Son-in-Law - A Memoir (Coming Soon)

The Son-in-Law is a memoir about life inside a high-demand religious organization led by my father-in-law and the unraveling that led to our departure at 34.

It traces the years of loyalty and leadership within the system, the internal conflict that made staying impossible, and the difficult decision to walk away with my wife and boys into uncertainty.

But this is not only a story about leaving. It is about rebuilding from the ground up. It offers a candid view of the ups and downs and serves as a roadmap for others facing similar uncertainty.

At its core, The Son-in-Law is about giving it all up to find yourself — for you and your family.

Telling the Story

After years of silence, I’m sharing the story of how my wife and I left the Restored Church of God and what it took to rebuild our lives from the ground up.
